A list of music worth purchasing
Hey everyone, welcome to a special edition of the Apotheosis newsletter. This’ll be a short one, but it’s one of the most important newsletters I’ll put out all year.
As you may know, Friday May 7th is the final Bandcamp Friday for the foreseeable future. If you’re not familiar with Bandcamp or Bandcamp Friday here’s the gist of it. Bandcamp is a music marketplace much like iTunes was before Apple decided they could make more money via streaming. The platform allows artists and labels to post their music for sale and gives them the power to name their price rather than the platform.
Bandcamp Friday was first launched in March of 2020 to help artists supplement their lost income during the COVID-19 pandemic when they could not tour. During Bandcamp Fridays, Bandcamp waived their share of purchases, allowing artists (and labels) to collect 100% of what you paid for the album (minus merchant processor fees). While the pandemic is still ongoing, and remains extremely serious in certain regions and countries, we appear to be reaching the point where live shows will once again be able to take place. As such, Bandcamp Fridays will be coming to a close.
Now, don’t worry that Bandcamp is becoming greedy. Bands still receive a pretty impressive share of the money you pay them (82% after processing fees, which equates to something near a 10% fee for Bandcamp) and Bandcamp remaining operational is amazing for smaller artists.
But since Bandcamp Friday is coming to a close for the time being, here’s a long list of some music that you should check out, and hopefully purchase, on 5/7.
